Dr. James Kevin Culberson

1963 - 2021

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
— Romans 8:38-39

Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. James Kevin Culberson announces his unexpected passing, on April 30, 2021, at the age of 57 years. For reasons unknown and unfathomable, Kevin took his own life.

Dr. Culberson was born in Salt Lake City, UT on May 18th, 1963 to James Floyd Culberson and Stacey Lee Thurman. Kevin married Monica Lynn Zuercher on September 3rd, 1983; they were married for 37 years. Although most of his life was spent in Texas, he never wanted to wash the red dust of Utah off of his Jeep. He often enjoyed off-roading trips with his family through the stunning red rock landscapes surrounding Moab, UT. He was an avid scholar and his home library consists of thousands of volumes. He graduated from Richland High School and continued his studies at the University of North Texas. He graduated summa cum laude in every degree he earned, eventually earning his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of North Texas with a concentration in modern European history. He devoted his life to passing knowledge to countless students over his long teaching career at Covenant Christian Academy.

His expertise and influence was fundamental in developing the core curriculum and helped cultivate the distinctively classical institution it is today. His greatest pride and favorite students were his three children. Kevin was an Eagle Scout and served as Scoutmaster for Troop 321. He professed his faith in Christ from an early age, and was an active member of the Church, most recently holding his membership at Mid Cities Presbyterian Church.

Curiosity is the essence of human existence. Kevin often turned to his research and his faith to find the answers to life’s greatest questions. Chances are that even the most intellectually-driven people you know, at some point in their lifetime, will encounter a question that they simply cannot find an answer for. Honor Kevin’s legacy by picking up a good book on a subject matter you know nothing about, taking a loved one out to lunch, and in lieu of flowers, consider making a memorial contribution to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, please tell someone you love and seek help by calling the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or call 911. Don’t wait.

Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the US.

Dr. Culberson was laid to rest in a beautiful pine chest, lovingly handcrafted by his son-in-law, Taylor Carpenter, along with his children and their significant others. The one-of-a-kind masterpiece took over 72 hours to complete, and features brass hardware, a decorative Celtic cross, and leather-wrapped sisal rope handles. They built it in the same garage, using the same tools that Dr. Culberson often used when working on projects.
